Hello, Possums!

Australia - it's time to sort your shit out

On Love is in the Detail two brides celebrate marriage in UK while same-sex marriage remains illegal in Australia.
This week my wonderful wife Lisa and I marked 6 months since the magnificent day when we - surrounded by the people we adore - publicly declared our love, making our wedding vows to each other with all the gravity they deserve. Yet as we sit here, still radiating in the joy of this milestone event, it's impossible for me to ignore the pathetic state-of-affairs deeming it illegal for couples like Lisa and I to be married in the country I am ordinarily so proud to call home. I mean, come on.

My funny (tight-arsed) Valentine...

Happy Valentine's Day lovely person.
I would absolutely hate Valentine's Day if I wasn't such a soppy sucker. V Day is really just an an excuse to conduct myself with the kind of dreamy suggestiveness I wish I had the stamina to pull off every day  (most  days I fail even to shower). Lisa and I have a couple of traditions when observing this, the most cringey of holidays...

WHAT A BUNT...ing tutorial worth reading

I know, I know - you're completely over bunting. Now more rampant than rats, rabbits and Cher impersonators combined, I get that this post is coming in 3-5 years too late.  I'm stubbornly sharing it here for two reasons:
  1. I bloody love bunting
  2. I once purchased a lovely string of bunting, only to realise - not three weeks later upon picking up  needle and thread - that it is easier to make than a sandwich (my general reference point for life). Yes, I'm still miffed.

A bit of polyester goes a long way... why I'm embracing the 80s

We needn’t mentioned here that I’m a sucker for pin-up style.  Let’s face it, there are certain hip-to-waist ratios that prevent one from wearing anything but full-circled skirts... or a muumuu.  This is not something I am unhappy about. When you’re as irritatingly theatrical as I am, skipping through your day as if an extra in a Lucille Ball film is hardly a chore. A need, equivalent to that of breathing, to belt everything placed on my body is a blissful reality.

In relaunching the blog under its new moniker (redesign and general jazziness still to come), I wanted the first post to be a little DIY 'how to' on wedding favour bags for a few reasons:

Just One Day.  Or, is it?

Up until recently, I was one of the those people.  You know the ones I mean.
Those people who sit back and guffaw at the costs and all-round stresses of weddings.  'Why bother?!'  'Why waste all that time and energy on something that's gone in the space of a few too many glasses of expensive bubbly?'

Unrealistic Sewing Goal #2: The Handmade Christmas

I’m putting it out there.  Every year I make the same hollow vow - no, not the one promising to cut chips and gravy from my diet (I know no one actually expected me to stick to that one)… the OTHER one – the one vowing to a handmade Christmas.  Bespoke gifts hand-sewn and wrapped with love, delicious treats lovingly baked and presented in perfectly adorned clip-top jars, a tree strewn with beautifully eclectic decos and a table laden with sumptuous food set amongst the sort of lush garlands and vintage-inspired place settings that exist only on Pinterest.

Turning 30… (almost) Nailed It

Let me upfront here - this is in no way sewing-related but rather another shameless bastardisation of this forum to express the views I would otherwise bore some poor sod with on the 272 bus. It’s also an unsubtle remainder to you all that it is my birthday in a mere matter of days... so you’ll need to get the flowers ordered/cake baked/gift in the mail/star named if you wish to maintain even a shred of a relationship with me for the impending decade.

Sewing my way back in love with my wardobe

I like clothes. While it’s not with the passionate zeal I once did (remember back when NOTHING else mattered more than what you were wearing to your friend’s house party that weekend? Okay, you and I both know I was far too nerdy to go to house parties - after all, my favourite outfit was a Tokyo Ghetto Pussy t-shirt paired with a Pokémon backpack... but I think you get the sentiment).  I’m delighted that my little sojourn into the sewing world is reigniting that little fashion fire within me.

Well, that's a surprise...

So, err... I have some news.

No, I'm not pregnant (a process which, for me, would involve months at a fertility clinic and therefore completely contradict the title of this post. I suppose there's always immaculate conception but let's be honest, "surprise" wouldn't exactly capture that scenario either, would it?). Let me show you:

Scarily accurate, token stock-image.
This post is one of the hardest things I have ever written.
(At this point, you may be sceptical, as clearly I haven’t actually written anything yet.  Technically, you're correct (not to mention pedantic). But the difference between us is: I know what’s coming.)

3 things I learned from sewing my first commercial pattern

I recently knocked up this little beauty as my first ever foray into the world of commercial patterns.  Not bad, eh?? I was shocked beyond belief that what emerged from the nightmare of fabric scraps and tangled cotton sprawled across the floorboards of several rooms (sorry babe) was a real, wearable piece of clothing that mildly resembled a garment one might actually pay for.

FUN and funny - what's not to love about sewing?

Anyone following this blog will already appreciate it is much less about the actual function of sewing and a whole lot more about me trying my hand at something new. To put it in Microsoft Word terms, you could ‘find and replace’ the term “sewing” with pretty much any pursuit imaginable and (save for the bits about interfacing, selvedges and twin needles) the posts would make something resembling near-perfect sense (likely even more in some cases. Especially if the word was "jelly-wrestling"). So, why sewing?

Buying Vintage

Vintage polka-dot sheer dress, purchased for USD$50 in NYC July 2014.
In my early teenage years I was crazy for vintage shopping. Only it had a much more glamorous name then: "scrounging for hours at op-shops*, markets and garage sales* for second-hand frocks, shoes and skirts that weren't damaged nor resembled the attire of an unfortunate 80s bridesmaid". By the mid-00s, however, vintage shopping in Australia had basically gone to the dogs. Let me explain:

In case the heading off this website didn't make it excruciatingly obvious: I have a big bum. The thing about big bums is they tend to be bolstered by big thighs, which are in turn bolstered by big calves and so on and so forth. Unless of course you are like my friend Laureen and your hypnotic, full booty is balanced upon equally delicious long legs. But we're not talking about her.

Quick Project: Napkins

I can only assume there are thousands of unopened letters to publishers of sewing books from angry readers demanding to be refunded for the printing cost of the napkin “pattern” they just discovered splayed across pages 6 and 7 of their latest purchase.  I am sorry if you yourself have published an annotated collection of summative essays detailing the subtle art of sewing squares, but for everyone else, I think you’d appreciate that a 2-page illustrated napkin guide is kind of overkill.

Unrealistic Sewing Goal #1: Caroline’s Wedding Dress, PART ONE

6/7/2014

Recently my quintessentially lovable friend Caroline dropped the ultimate bombshell for any aspiring-but-still-at-the-completely-hopeless-stage seamstress.  You see, Caroline is getting married.  In fact, she is marrying a Brazilian in Brazil at the height of the Brazilian summer. Devastatingly I am unable to be there so, of course, I would love to do something to be involved in the day in my own little way. Despite all of this, nothing prepares you for that text: “I’ve got an idea for a wedding dress…”  *gulp*

It occurred to me in the shower the other day (ah, the shower – the source of all thoughts worth thinking) that my life, or rather, my online/shared/documented life was very much like one of those barely memorable home auction shows from the early-90s.  You know the ones?  Location, Location, Homes Under the Hammer, Flog My Joint Because I can’t bare the Sight of It for One More Minute, that sort of thing.  These shows were essentially edited in the same (apparently successful) formulaic manner:
